 A child found a cocoon on a branch of the tree in his back yard. As he looked, the cocoon began to wiggle and tremble! The boy broke off the branch and carried it inside. His eyes were riveted to the epic struggle of the insect to extract itself. Wishing to be a hero, the boy maneuvered his fingers around and pulled apart the layers to free the butterfly.  The butterfly tumbled out on the table, with useless and dull wings curled like arthritic fingers around its limp body.  After ten unending minutes of struggle, the butterfly gave up and died. 

 Tears welled up as misunderstanding washed over him.  What happened?  The boy’s mother, discovering her son frozen by the lifeless insect, swept him into her arms.  A lifetime lesson emerged as she carefully explained that the butterfly must struggle to escape the cocoon in order to bring life to its wings.  Without the struggle, the wings won’t get blood flow, the colors never emerge, and the wings fail to open.  What looked like a horrible struggle actually brings life and beauty. 

Counties, cities, states, and even countries are lifting the mask mandates, COVID restrictions, and opening up after two years of being shut or restricted. It is as if the world is coming out of a cocoon.  It has been a struggle! Yet this struggle causes our spirits to push and strengthen, the colors of our lives emerge with brilliance, and we can stretch our wings and fly. You are now emerging from the struggle into a season of new growth. You are ready to fly!  Where do you think this new season will lead? Where do you think your new wings will take you?
